I got an inquiry for a custom-made dress at the beginning of October last year. My client said that she had looked at my portfolio and liked my style. I felt honoured. Of course, I would do the dress. I haven’t done that many custom dresses, mostly for my self, but I was happy to accept the challenge. I got plenty of photos of her style and earlier dresses which made it easy to start to design this evening dress for HER.
In the first meeting, we went to a fabric store to see which fabrics and especially colours my client prefers. Strong colours were her thing. That I had noticed already from the photos I got earlier. I showed her some of my sketches, and she loved those. I was so excited after the meeting! It felt so good to hear that my client trusts me 100 % and is happy that I could help her by designing and doing a dress just for her.
In the beginning, when we started to design the dress, there was a chance that the dress would hit the red carpet in December. I designed a two-piece evening gown: shorter dress combined with a long skirt. There are not as many occasions for a long evening gown as for a shorter dress. And for example, a long skirt can also easily be worn down with a t-shirt and sneakers.
Even though the dress didn’t make it to the red carpet in the end, I felt so honoured that I was asked to make a dress for this special event. It still makes me feel so good when I’m thinking about it. That amount of trust from my client, as well as succeeding, makes me also trust myself more. When my client came to pick up the dress and tried it on, I was so nervous. Even though I trust myself and that I have done the dress with her measurements, it was exciting. That part is always exciting with custom-made dresses. When she came out from the fitting room, and I saw that the dress fits perfectly, that almost made me cry. The feeling of succeeding and happiness on my clients face took over. That is the best.
